At work, we try monthly to do “designer outings.” These outings are designed to help us continue to build our creativity and get us out of the office to see design in other places or experience design in different ways. In the past we’ve done a couple of really fun outings. We did an alphabet picture scavenger hunt in downtown Salt Lake, we went to a museum, we watched “Helvetica” the movie and a couple of other fun things. They have been a great experience for us as a group of designers. I feel like we have learned a lot, and built a lot of friendship and trust among each other.
This month for our designer outing, we decided to stay in the office and play Photoshop Telephone. Here’s the rules of the way we played. We started with a stock photo image. We cropped it to 3 inches by 12 inches and passed it on to the first designer. He had to take the three inches of the photo and create continue it into a 12×12 inch piece of his own. As long as there was a smooth transition between the three inches you were given and your 12 inches you could do whatever you wanted. We each took 4 hours to fill our 12 inches and then at the end of the 4 hours, we cropped our image to 3 inches by 12 inches and passed our piece to the next designer in line. They then had to do the same thing and incorporate the 3 inches into theirs and add 12 inches to it. Does that make sense?
Anyway. It ws pretty exciting and we all had a great time. One of the great things about it was we could do whatever we wanted with our 12 inches, so in the end, each piece was an interesting insight to each of our different designers’ personalities. We named it, “Lo Specchio,” meaning The Mirror in some other language (I can’t remember which).
Anyway. It’s a pretty bizarre piece over all, and we have some weird designers, but that’s why I love it. Enjoy our masterpiece! (Click on the image for a bigger version)
