14I’m the type of person who listens to music more for the words than for the music. I think song writers are so talented and some of the most entertaining lines of the written word can be found in songs. Over the years I have kept track of lyrics that I love and have caught my attention. Here are some of my favorite.
• “I feel ugly, but I know I still turn you on.” -Matchbox 20
• “Your smile could change our movie and the world.” -BareNakedLadies
• “Sometimes I get so weird, I even freak myself out.” -Avril
• “You’ve got to get up every morning with a smile on your face and show the word all the love in your heart.” -Carol King
Every time I hear these lines and so many others, I instantly smile. That whats so great about lyrics, they can remind you of so many things and can relate so well to you.
What are your favorite lyrics?

24Typographically Speaking…

While we were in Nashville, we went to the Country Music Hall of Fame. I can’t say that I’m much of a Country Music fan (I actually didn’t know any of the names in that place except if they were in “Walk the Line”), but I actually loved it! LOVED IT! Typographically speaking, it was amazing. Everything there was so cool from a graphic design point of view. I could have spent hours and hours there looking at all the things. I tried to take some pictures of all the cool things, but it was kind of hard because we couldn’t use our flash. Here’s some great things I found:
It was really fun. Sorry the pictures aren’t that great. It was a great exploration of different uses of type to create the same overall look and theme. It was amazing how everything was different, but it all flowed together so well. If you like graphic design or typography or even architecture you should definitely visit the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Last weekend for Mother’s Day, I decided that I wanted to finish decorating my living room. The last couple of weeks, I have been putting up some pictures from our wedding and a BEAUTIFUL picture of Christ that Bryan bought me for my birthday. The only thing left was a focal point above the couch. (the Cardon’s next door have this great picture above their couch that I’m totally jealous of, so I needed to find something that would look almost as cute) So, a few weeks earlier, we went to IKEA and found this really cool mirror, and after looking around at a couple of other places, it was the best deal and would look the best — so we went and bought it. After we bought it, we brought it home and my handsome handsome husband and Jordan moved the couch out of the way and went all “handy men” on Kinsale and I and put it up on the wall. They found the stud, drilled a hole, and measured where the other hole needed to be (only one inch away from the other stud) and put the screws in (surprisingly, it’s really sturdy too). I was really impressed and I think it really ended up looking great. What do you think?
Another exciting thing:
The last couple of days at work, I have been creating a special VIP invitation to an event we are putting on for the President of our company and a couple of other important people. I was talking about the invitation with some of the other designers and we came up with the idea to do a pop up card to invite them. So with Andrea’s help we came up with some options. We had some big plans for out of control mountains popping up out of the card, but we took a little different route. So today, I finished it and I think it turned out really cool. We only need to make five. We cut out all the parts today and will put the cards together tomorrow. I’m pretty impressed and was very pleased with the final results. (the pictures aren’t the best… sorry)

04I found this thought on happiness and loved it:
If you want to buy happiness, you are much better off buying experience rather than a thing. That’s because a thing like a car, new clothes, or a cool gadget will always wear down, break down over time, while an experience, like going to the Galapagose, or a great concert, will only improve over time. You’ll always have it (Paris, bunjee jumping, that meal) forever. In the long term an experience delivers more happiness per dollar. Oh, and warm puppies (and children) are experiences, not things.

04Page Rank 4

I would just like everyone to know, that currently katiephelps.com is a page rank 4. I seriously have no idea what that means or what it can do for me, but all I know is that Bryan looked it up and all he could say is, “No way. How is that possible? What?” Then he went online to a resource from Google and it was true. WA HOO! ha ha ha.

16What a Dork!

Some stories:
Earlier at work, my friends and I were all sitting around talking. I was showing a friend of mine something on the internet. I was explaining to him that it was php or javascript based and you just needed to go in and edit the HTML code. And he looked up at me and said, “I have no idea what you’re talking about. All I heard was WAH WAH WAH.” Then another of my friends turned around and said, “She has to be able to talk like that to communicate with her husband.” Then we laughed. Oh web people are such dorks.
Another time, during lunch we were sitting in the lunch room eating and some people from the Support Team came in and started talking about the things they were working on. This didn’t work here, and this person was talking about their database and the location of their files. My friends and I at work just looked at each other amazed. Support people are such dorks.
Today at lunch, we sat around the table and talked for 20 minutes about this really nice font I found at Veer.com. “It’s a San Serif font with really straight edges. It’s kind of like ITC Kabel,” I explained to Ryan and Ian. “But I like it better than Kabel because the S has really small space between it’s lines.” “You know,” Ryan said, “They should have a pronunciation guide for font names.” I said, “Why because I say Kabel differently than you.” He said, “Yeah, but also…” and then we talked about all the fonts that we weren’t sure how to pronounce. This conversation went on for quite a few minutes. We finished lunch and went upstairs.
Later as I was sitting, thinking…I realized: we’re all dorks. It doesn’t matter what we are dorks about. All groups of people have the things that they are dorks about. It doesn’t matter what it is or who you are, there is something that you think is important and interesting that someone else things is so lame.
Isn’t it great?

14Deal…NO DEAL

Saturday morning, my sisters, mom and I decided to try out for Deal or No Deal. We learned from KSL channel 5 News that Deal or No Deal was doing a casting here in Salt Lake City at the RC Willey on 2100 S. And I was going. We all decided on our good reason for going and the story that we could tell Howie, filled out the 11 page try-out form and were on our way. All wearing green (green for grass, we decided if we won, we would buy our parents grass for their backyard. They have lived in the house for 9 years and due to my dad losing his job they have never been able to put grass in the backyard. They have dirt).
We took Trax up to 2100 S and walked the rest of the way. We had no idea what we were in for. On Trax, you can see the RC Willey right before the 2100 S stop. We looked out the window and masses and masses of people filled the RC Willey parking lot. I don’t think I’ve seen that many people in one place beside Disneyland. We thought, this is crazy, but we didn’t know half of it. So we walked from the Trax station to the RC Willey, looking for the end of the line. And we kept walking, and kept walking, and kept walking. Then we left the RC Willey area, went down the street, down another street, down another street and finally found the end. This picture is a Google map of the area. The pink area is where all the people were. It was pretty insane. But we thought, “Well, it’s a once in a lifetime thing. Let’s do it.” Then after we waited in the sun for a little bit, we though, “well maybe we should see how long it will take us to get to the end of that corner.” And we started making friends with the people in line. We were right in front of a cute pregnant woman and her mom. They were pretty funny and really entertaining to talk to. Once we got to the end of the street, we thought, “well, we’ll go to the next end.” Then someone walking by told us they had been there since 6 in the morning (it was 11 a.m.). 5 hours?! No way. Then someone told us it was probably a 12 hour wait. Now we were seriously questioning our decision. 12 hours? Then an official looking person came around and told us they only had 5 spots left. Odds were not good. So after
much chatting among ourselves…after only one hour of waiting and only moving 1/4 mile, we decided the best thing we could do at this point is get back on Trax and go buy shoes.
So we did: Although we didn’t make it on Deal or No Deal, we had a great time as girls, came home with cute cute shoes, got a little bit of sun (well Rachel was more than a little bit — she was pretty burned) and now we can say, “We almost tried out for Deal or No Deal.
It was quite an excellent day. If you want to find out more about the audition check out KSL.
