Family Lines

Here is an up-close view of the family tree in lines. I love how it turned out and how well it matches James room. :)

James' Family Lines

(the names are blurred out just a little bit. in the real print, they are in black and really easy to see. they look great.)

p.s. if you love these family trees (the circle or the lines) and would like one for your family, contact me. I’ve decided to sell them. They’ll make a great Christmas present and if you contact me soon, I’ll be able to get it to you in time for Christmas.

Turning Hearts to the Fathers

And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers…

Malachi 4:6

I love the idea of having a family tree in the home to always remember the wonderful heritage we come from. However, I don’t really like how family trees often look.

Then one day, I came across this cute shop: My Tree and Me and I fell in love. I loved their modern take on the family tree and wanted to do something like it (but not pay $120).

So I decided to make one of my own. Originally, I had thought that I was just stealing the idea straight from them (I saw the site, forgot to bookmark it, made one of my own, then found the site again), but it turned out that my idea was different that the specific trees they sell.

Here it is:

I love love love the way it turned out. I found a frame at Ikea that is 20×20 so I just need to get this printed and it will be a great addition to my living room. (I thought it was a little bit weird to post the first and last names of all my family on an open blog … I try to be safe about what I put up here … so I changed out the names for this post, but in the real tree it has all the first, middle and last names for James’ five generations.)

I toyed around with the idea of including more information like birth and death dates for each person (as applicable) but decided not to for right now. I just love how clean and simple it is. Maybe in the future I’ll expand it a little bit more, but for now I am very happy.

Now I just have to come up with another idea for baby #2. (who still doesn’t have a name. Guess we shouldn’t have used up all our grandpa names with james…)

Handle with Prayer

This last week for Young Women our lesson was on Prayer and I loved one of the quotes from the book by President Harold B. Lee.  Some of you may have heard it before, but I loved it and decided to make a little handout from it.

Life is fragile, and therefore, should be handled with prayer.

I did change the quote just a little for my handout, so it’s more a paraphrase than a quote, but I think it turned out pretty cute.  So cute in fact that I printed a bigger one off for myself and framed it.

It matches my office!  I’m pretty into that font lately.  The one thing I don’t like though is the E.  Specifically the middle post of the E.  Whatever though. It’s a fad, and I’m sure I’ll get tired of it soon. Kind of like at one point my favorite font was Gill Sans, it’s a nice font, but really?  Gill Sans.  Oh well. And, my handsome, handsome husband says that I should share my talents, so if any of you love it and would like a copy, I would be more than happy to share.

My New Space

Wahoo!  For Christmas, Bryan bought me this beautiful letterpress picture of the Salt Lake Temple(Thank you Cameron Moll) Sadly though, it was a weird shape, so it wouldn’t fit into a standard frame and needed to be custom framed.  Near our anniversary I decided it was time to get it framed and today we got it back and put it up.  It looks amazing.  After I got this wonderful picture, I knew that the theme of my office was going to be letters.  So I created another poster to hang up that had letters in it (I wish that I could say that I arranged the letters to look cool like that myself, but it is the alphabet from a desktop wallpaper I found on ilovetypography.com).  I also took an idea from Better Homes and Gardens to frame some scrapbook paper in my colors of choice to add some color pop to the frame cluster. Here it is:

the pictures

We also rearranged the office just a little while ago to accommodate a new desk that we bought for Bryan.  I love my new space.  My desk is not looking right out the window, but when I turn I have a beautiful view of the park behind our house (before I had a wonderful view of the power lines and the church).  Here’s where I was before:

Before

Here’s my new workspace now with the great new pictures above it.

After

I kind of LOVE my new space.  I think the pictures above the desk work so well.  After I take the time to make Bryan’s desk look better, then I’ll post pictures of our whole office.  Since both of us have our own computer and like our own space, we have two desks in our little office and it’s a little cramped, but I think we’ve done pretty good at making it look nice anyway.

Sometimes, I’m just so proud of my decorating skills…

Some Projects

Sometimes when I’m at home, I come upstairs to my computer and do that same thing at home that I do at work, design stuff.  Lately, I have done some fun projects that I thought turned out pretty cute. So now you get to see them.  See below for explanations of each of the pieces.

(Because some of the events that I designed invitations for, haven’t happened yet–and I don’t feel that it’s my place to post the dates and times on my blog for just anyone to go and crash the events–I have blurred out the dates.  It wasn’t part of the design, but it’s probably safer since I’m not entirely sure who reads my blog.)

First: My friend at work is getting married soon and she asked me to design her wedding invites.  She was great to work with, she knew exactly what she wanted them to look like.  Her style was really simple and elegant.  Because it was a wedding invite, there were a couple of pieces, the invite, the temple invite, the luncheon RSVP card and a map.

Second: Also for my friend who is getting married is a bridal shower invite. The girls at work are throwing it for her and asked me to help with the invitations. They wanted to do a lingerie party, so that was the theme of the invite. I did two different colors, pink (because it’s so Victoria Secret) and purple because she loves purple. We printed the purple ones, but I loved the vibrancy of the pink, so that’s what you get to see.

Third: Back in April, over spring break we had a Young Woman retreat. I made invites for our event that included the two day agenda and what the girls needed to bring.  I designed it in one long sheet, but so that it could fold into three panels.  I’ve shown the full view and the individual panels.

Enjoy!

(And, this is my 100th post!  Happy 100th post to me.  I’m not sure if this is the most exciting post for my 100th post, but it works, right? For how long I’ve had this blog, 100 posts isn’t really that many, but an exciting milestone, never the less.)

A New Hobby

The other day, I was very bored at home.  Bryan was at school and I was just sitting around not doing much of anything (when only two people live in the house, there is only so much cleaning you can do).  So I did what I normally do when I am bored: I called my mom.  We chatted for a little bit and I complained that I was bored.  She tried to help me think of something I could do, and finally decided that I just need a hobby.  So I’ve been thinking about that for a little bit.  What should I do for a hobby?  She suggested that I need to scrapbook some of my pictures (Nearly 2 years after my wedding, I still don’t have a single wedding picture printed out), then added, “but stick to your strengths Katie, you could do it all on the computer.”  I do already know all of the programs, and my business card does say graphic designer… so why not? So I have been looking a lot into the whole idea of digital scrapbooking (I am worried that my pages will come out more like newspaper layouts, because that is what I know, instead of cute pages).  I think I am going to start.  I need to set a goal or it won’t happen.  So, my goal is by this time next week I will have made one page. (who knows how long it will take me to do a page)  I think I’ll start with my recent San Francisco trip.  So next Monday, I will post some pages about my San Fran trip.  Look for it.
