As I mentioned in my last post, my little baby is due in 14 days. I’m very very much looking forward to meeting this little squirmy guy and holding him in my arms for the first time (and not on my hips and bladder).

I have an app on my phone that keeps telling me to write down a pregnancy memory. And today, I felt like writing down how it all felt this time around. So you all get to read it.

Just for Good Measure... The Belly: 38 Weeks

This pregnancy has been so different than my pregnancy with James. I have had heartburn to the point that I have to take a pill every morning just to make it through the day and TUMS don’t make a dent in the pain. I wasn’t nearly as sick with this little one as I was with James. There were only a few times that I had to make a mad dash for the bathroom. Also, this time, I don’t have any indications of high blood pressure and will probably not have to be put on bed rest (except by my own instructions).

(I do have to admit though, last week at my 37 week appointment, I freaked out a little bit, worried that they would tell me I had high blood pressure again and send me to the hospital or put me on bed rest. It was my 37 week appointment with James that all the craziness happened, so I was so worried. I packed my hospital bag and a bag for James and was a total mess the whole morning before we went in. Poor Bryan. I don’t think he knew why I was being a crazy. He’s deals with me so well though.)

This little guy moves so much more than James did. In the evenings he is especially wiggly. Some nights I will sit in bed and just watch my stomach move back and forth, back and forth. One night Bryan and I sat and watched my belly more for a good 20 minutes. It was crazy.

Really though, one of the biggest differences between this pregnancy and the last, is this pregnancy I have James to chase around. I have no idea how people with children have more children. Chasing around my 16-month-old is exhausting with this big belly to lug around too. I’m truly thankful that he can walk though. If he were a late walker, I’m not sure I could ever go anywhere. When we go shopping or out of the house, I only have to pick him up to get him in and out of the car. Besides that, he’s really good to hold my hand and walk along side me until we get where we are going or get to a cart to put him in. Carrying him wears me out so quickly. Thank goodness he was so determined to be mobile (sometimes, little tiny things like these strengthen my testimony so much and remind me that my Heavenly Father is watching out for me and has a plan for me. I know it seems so small, but James walking has been such a blessing).

James is becoming so independent and learning so much every day. It’s so fun to watch him grow, but so frightening to think of how he is going to be when little baby B joins the family. The transition scares me a little bit, but I know that I will have Dr. Pepper to help me through it. :)

I had a conversation with Bryan the other day about how I am so tired lately, I just want the baby to come. He reminded me that after the baby comes, I’ll still be just as tired because he will wake up during the night…Yes, I responded, but I wake up just as many times during the night right now to go to the bathroom, or because the baby is kicking me or I’m having Braxton Hicks. But after the baby comes, I can have Dr. Pepper again to help me make it through the day until I get used to the new schedule. (I don’t like drinking caffeine during pregnancy for all those good health reasons, but also with this pregnancy it gives me CRAZY restless legs when I do have a sip or two, so I have had to cut it out COMPLETELY.)

We haven’t picked out a name for Baby B yet, but we know that it is going to start with the letter B (hence calling him, Baby B). With James we knew we wanted to name him after his two grandpas. James for Bryan’s dad and Edward for my dad. With Baby B, we weren’t sure what we wanted. We went through other grandpa and family names, and weren’t sold on any of them. We did know that we wanted him to have the same middle name as Bryan, but we didn’t want to name him Bryan Jr. Then we thought of giving him the same initials as Bryan and carrying on Bryan’s name in that way. So since we made that decision, we have narrowed it down to a handful of B names and are just waiting to see if one jumps ahead of the others. What do you think?

Bennett

Benson

Brayden

Bryan suggested the other night that we just name him Blue. I ruled that one out.

Sometimes when I think about it, I can’t believe it has really been five years since this day:

Our Wedding Day

Five years seems like such a long time, but it still seems like it was just yesterday that we entered the temple together and made sacred covenants and changed our lives forever.

As I was reading through the Ensign this last week and with the thought in my mind that our anniversary was coming up, I reread Elder Richard G. Scott’s talk from the Sunday afternoon session of this last General Conference, The Eternal Blessings of Marriage. As I read the talk and thought about my own feelings about the blessing that marriage is in my life, I was touched with something he said.

I have no power to describe the peace and serenity that come from the assurance that as I continue to live worthily, I will be able to be with my beloved Jeanene and our children forever beacuse of that sacred ordinance performed with the proper priesthood authority in the house of the Lord.

I echo Elder Scott’s feelings and know that words can’t fully describe how wonderful it is to know that our family can be forever. I feel so thankful to know that I can be with Bryan for all eternity. As we sit together on the couch and talk about the mundane things that happened during the day, I am filled with such a peace and wonder knowing that as we live worthy, these simple yet joyful moments never have to end.

I love Bryan more today than I ever have, and know that our love can continue to grow in the many many more years we will spend together.

The temple sealing has greater meaning as life unfolds. It will help you draw ever closer together and find greater joy and fulfillment.

-Elder Richard G. Scott

(Mel, can you hear that song in your head?)

Our holidays were wonderful! How were yours?

We began the holidays by taking a quick trip to California to visit my brother. James and I made the trip with my parents and wee sis.

James was a trooper for his first looong drive

He only had one freak out. We left a few days before Christmas, stayed a day, and came back. Remember the big rain storms in southern CA and southern UT? Yeah, we drove through those.

Before we left, we took out one of the captains chairs in my parents mini-van so there was only one and the back bench, giving James a little bit of crawling room when we were stopped. It was a wonderful idea. Because of the rain and the cold, I didn’t brave the weather to take him into gross gas stations, so he just chilled in the car, crawling around while we took turns going inside. Thanks to Grandma, he even got chances to sit up front and play with buttons.

"Driving" the car was his favorite part of the trip.

(Don’t worry, the car was in park and the emergency break was on while he “drove.”) Notice the band-aid on his hand… two days before we left he pulled my straighten off the bathroom counter onto his hand. Luckily, it was in the process of cooling down, so the burn wasn’t as bad as it could have been (and it was a straightener and not a curling iron so it wasn’t as big of a burn). He also ran head first into the bed frame giving him the lovely line on his forehead that you can see in the top picture.

Begin side note:

This kid is into EVERYTHING and never sits still. He can open drawers, cupboards and his favorite thing in the world to play with are doors, swinging them back and forth. If he does ever push them all the way closed, he cries, because he toy doesn’t work any more. He tries to “walk” between his two standing toys, falling on his face. He attempted the stairs and tries to scale our entertainment center. Yesterday, I took something in the bedroom and came back and couldn’t find him anywhere… He’d made his way into the half bathroom and discovered the toilet paper. joy.

He's a little booger...

Needless to say, baby-proofing is in FULL SWING at our house. He finds things I never would have imagined.

End side note.

Back to our trip. We stayed with my brother, Rob and his beautiful wife, Ali. James is now afraid of Rob (I might be too if I met him in a dark alley). Due to the rain, and their flight to Australia we didn’t stay long and were back on the road in the torrential rain.

On the way home, we brought my brother’s three dogs. James LOVED them. They HATED James.

This was the closest they got to him

The car ride back was a little crowded with 4 adults, a baby and three dogs. Yes, they are small dogs, but they still got in the way. We even had a little diaper changing incident the ended with unpleasant stuff on Rachel’s pillow because the dogs were taking up all the floor space I needed to change a diaper.

On Christmas Eve, we joined my mom’s family for the traditional Food and Nativity night. The food was fabulous. The company was wonderful and James found something new to scale.

He might be Evel Knievell reincarnated. He has no sense of fear.

My grandma was able to join us (she’s been staying in the rest home while her broken leg heals, she’s almost ready to go home! Yay!), and read the nativity from the Bible. James got to be Baby Jesus this year and he even sat still longer than I thought he would.

The grandkids acting out the nativity

On the left, Rachel and Bree are the shepherds. Next, standing in the red is Emily as an angel and Abby as the star. Below the star we have Mary and Joseph, as portrayed by Andrew and Leah with Mary holding Baby Jesus. Above Mary and the baby are our wise men, Jared and Jessie. I think the 3rd wise man (Alyssa) decided to stay with her mom instead.

My grandma reading the story of Christ’s birth is one of my favorite memories of Christmas each year.

On Christmas morning, we woke up earlier than we wanted, our sweet baby decided to sleep from 9 until 12, then stay awake until 2:30, so 8 a.m. was EARLY. But it was worth it because we got to talk to JOSEPH, AKA Elder McCracken, in Peru.

Listening to Uncle Joe

(I realized that I didn’t get a picture of all of us listening, but you can see my dad in the background with the phone. We listened on speaker, while he held the phone close to a recorder.)

It was great to talk to him. He loves it there and is enjoying the people and the work. He described it as the happiest and saddest time of his life. The happiest because of how much his testimony is growing and the saddest because he sees the people and knows how much the Gospel could help them, but they aren’t willing to listen.

(I also realized that I didn’t take any pictures of the present opening. James loved it… mostly the wrapping paper.)

so excited

He was pretty stoked about getting his hands on his dad’s mini oreos. Santa didn’t bring him a lot of candy, just some fun things to chew on and one candy cane. He was in heaven.

The next day we got together for the Phelps’ Family party. The kids all got together and bought Bryan’s parents a new TV so it was pretty exciting to bring it in. It is a super thin LED, only 1.25 inches. It’s crazy the things they do with TVs now.

James got to play with his favorite cousins too.

"Friends, forever...Talkin' 'bout Friends"

(name that song…)

The next week was really relaxed. It was wonderful. Bryan was able to stay and hang out with us all week, so that was lovely. We played games with my family, we made a gingerbread train, pillow piles and we watched lots of movies.

Pillow Pile

New Year’s eve was pretty low key too. We stayed home, tried to get James back on a normal sleeping schedule, watched movies and went to bed.

It was a lovely end to a lovely year.

I got a letter today from my little brother in Peru. I miss him, but I’m so happy that he is serving a mission. I bet he’s a great missionary.

He wrote the letter during General Conference weekend. He said that they can’t watch or listen to General Conference until the week after because Peru is getting ready to have an election and the law in Peru doesn’t allow people to gather together right before an election.

Here’s what he said about it:

This is conference weekend by the way. We have to wait till next week to watch it. I’m really bummed about that cuz shoot conference is like spiritual crack…

So there you have it. Words of wisdom from the mission field. I love to read his letters and hear about how much his testimony is growing, but also love to read things like this that show how much he’s still my little brother Joe.

I LOVE YOU ELDER JOE!

If you didn’t get the chance to see this talk from the General Relief Society Broadcast from September 25, then you need to watch this video. It was a wonderful reminder of how important charity is.

I enjoyed General Conference this weekend and am so thankful that I have the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in my life. I don’t know what I would do without it. I’m thankful for my membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and especially thankful to parents who loved and taught the gospel in our home.

I missed a few of the talks because James needed some love, but I’m excited go back and read them and reread the wonderful words that I did hear. I also love that The Church has already put some of the talks on YouTube and will probably have all of them up any time now. Technology is so wonderful sometimes.

What were your favorite talks from General Conference? What are you thankful for today?

I love, love, love, LOVED General Conference this weekend. If you didn’t have the opportunity to see it this weekend, make sure to read the conference edition of the Ensign when it comes out. It was really WONDERFUL.

I wanted to share a few of my favorite quotes from Conference. Here they are:

“You can’t do a Google search to gain a testimony,” Elder Ballard, Quorum of the Twelve

“Fear and faith can not coexist. One will overcome the other,” Elder Cook, Quorum of the Twelve

“Discipleship is not a spectator sport,” President Uchtdorf, 2nd Councilor in the First Presidency

“I am a nobody… and if you ever forget it, the Lord will remind you instantly and it won’t be pleasant,” Elder Packer, Quorum of the Twelve (quoted by Elder Anderson)

“Fear not; Be of good cheer. Our future is as bright as our faith,” President Monson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

“You can’t be a lifesaver by looking like all the other swimmers on the beach,” Elder Oaks, Quorum of the Twelve

“You are never lost when you can see the Temple,” Elder Stevenson, Quorum of the Seventy

“… Decisions determine destiny,” President Monson (Quoted by Elder Teixeira, Quorum of the Seventy)

These are only a few of the wonderful things that I was able to hear and feel during this Conference and just wanted to share my testimony that I know that as we listen to Conference, if we go to the Lord with a question or thought in our heart, the Lord will answer our prayers through His prophets. There were so many times, that the talks were so personal and perfectly inline with my life, that I know the things they were saying are true. And I have a testimony that the Lord does know me personally and knows my deepest thoughts, feelings, heartbreaks, joys and loves. I am so thankful for this Church and the truth, joy and peace it brings to my life.

I’m turning this into a tag and I tag you all! Post on your blog at least 3 of your favorite quotes from Conference (and write in your journal at least 3 of your “to-dos” that you felt during Conference). Then leave a comment here and let me know that you posted. The Internet can be a wonderful blessing in our lives to spread the Gospel or a horrible trap to pull us into sin…Let’s use it for good!

This last week, I finished “The Book of Mormon” again. I love to read The Book of Mormon because everytime I read it I learn something new. And everytime I read it, my testimony of the truth of it grows. I don’t think it will matter how many times I read it during my life, everytime I will learn something new and everytime my testimony grows.

As I have read The Book of Mormon, it always seems that when I get to the Book of Moroni, I read the whole book all in one sitting (it’s not that big, so it’s not too hard). And the Spirit that I feel as I read Moroni’s last words to us is always so strong. It’s amazing.

This time as I read through Moroni’s words I was reminded that the Lord does have a plan for me. Through our faith and as we continue to follow the plan he has set, He will guide us to do what He wants us to do.

It’s good to be reminded sometimes.
